Paddleboard at an iconic M22 location.

This article is published on The Outbound.

For a day on the water, off the shores of Lake Michigan head to Leland. Park in the marina and load onto your paddle boards from the boat ramp. You'll quickly find your way out of the marina, in which you can head right, left or to open water. Either way you'll find accessible beaches and clear sand on the waters bottom. Heading right out of the marina you'll find more ‘private’ beaches, heading left you'll find a public beach called, Vans. While beach walking is public up from the water to the ordinary high water mark, please be respectful of private land owners.

Grab a six pack, and scoot around. Make sure to grab a sandwich at the Cheese Shanty in Leland on your way out.

”The Michigan Supreme Court determined that the public has a right to walk along the shores of the Great Lakes, even on privately-owned land. Lakefront property owners may own the land down to the water’s edge, but the public trust doctrine nevertheless allows the public to walk on the land between the water’s edge and the “ordinary high water mark,” the place on the shore up to which the presence and action of the water is so continuous as to leave a distinct mark.”
